Feelings Word Chart
"The mental pain of not being able to communicate is nowhere near as big as the pain and knowledge that you didn't try."
~Cristin Reichmuth, M.A., MSTC
What Is It?

Are you or someone you know in need of getting
in touch with feelings or expanding limited vocabulary?
For Mental Health Professionals
Has your client ever said, "I know how I feel but I can't talk about it because I
don't know the right word?" Are you wanting your client to express more than
just, "I feel good" when things go well? Does your client use "angry" more
often than not to express feelings of hurt?  If your answer is "yes," then this
word chart is for you! It will help your clients to use appropriate words to
identify feelings and attain the verbal expressiveness essential to
communicate with greater accuracy and clarity.
Has your client ever said:
"I know how I feel but I can't talk about it
because I don't know the right word!"
This chart will help.
For Teachers
Remember that all feelings are valuable, not just the ones that make your
students feel good. Sometimes our students will want to add our own
comments such as, "You shouldn't feel sad about that."  As educators, we
should not deny our student's feelings. By allowing our students to talk freely,
we show that we respect his or her feelings and that his or her feelings are
important.  The Feelings Word Chart will help them to learn the words to
express their feelings, thus reduce anger and frustration.
Are your students having difficulty
in expressing themselves on
paper and in class?
For Parents
If you're like most parents, you sometimes worry about how your young child
will handle the whole process of growing up.  You may wonder if there is
anything you can do now that will help your child make safe choices as a
teenager.  The answer is-yes.  Listen to your child, and encourage him or her
    to talk about feelings.
Is your child commonly use
only 3 or 4 words to describe
their feelings?
For People Learning to Express Themselves
When we can't share feelings of sadness of anger, those feelings don't just go
away.  They get bottled up until eventually they spill over in some other way.
We may be unkind to our best friends or family members, we may perform
poorly in our job and that may result in career suicide, or, we may become
sad and withdrawn, unwilling to break out of our shell.  Adults who can't
express their feelings in a healthy way will find other ways to cope with those
feelings.  We've seen it before, adults will turn to alcohol, drugs,
codependency, or even extreme athletics to ignore the pain that results from
the inability to express our feelings.
