Rules and Precautions:
In order to make our event a fun and safe event, the following are some rules and precautions for parents/guardians
and athletes to keep in mind:

  • Bike Helmets: Bike helmets must be worn and buckled during the bike portion of the Event, including when in
the Transition Area. Helmets must comply with either CPSC, SNELL or ANSI standards as indicated by a label
on the inside. Parents/guardians/athletes must assure that the helmet fit is proper for the athlete.  Athletes
MUST place their race number on the FRONT of their helmet for identification purposes.
  • Bikes: Parents/Guardians/Athletes are encouraged to take the athlete's bike to a qualified shop for inspection
and adjustment prior to the Event. The bike inspection at the event is only for basic functioning of brakes and
steering, and is no substitute for inspection by a qualified mechanic.  Attention should be paid to brakes,
steering, wheels, inflation pressure, tire condition, chain, and pedals. Pedals should be inspected for sharp
edges and appropriate measures taken (such as duct taping) to prevent cutting injuries should the pedals hit
the athlete's legs.  Athletes MUST place their race number on the LEFT SIDE of their bike for identification
    purposes.
  • Swimming: Will be done in the lake. All athletes should be comfortable in the water. Swim aids such as
kickboards will be allowed (see Event Policies) and in some cases adults will be permitted to assist children.
However, it is our belief that each athlete should be capable of safely swimming the designated distance with
    no or minimal assistance.
  • Running: Parents/Guardians/Athletes should assure that the athlete has footwear that is suitable for running
the designated distance. To avoid tripping, the athlete should be able to properly tie his/her shoes, preferable
using double knots, or by using speed laces.
  • Race Numbers: Athletes MUST place their race number on the FRONT of their helmet for identification
purposes. Athletes MUST place their race number on the LEFT SIDE of their bike for identification purposes.
Athletes MUST run with their bib number on in the FRONT.  The bibs may be placed on the athlete from the
start of the race.  However, the bib number must be facing the front during the run.
  • Sun Protection: Due to the wave start, many athletes will have to wait before beginning the event. Similarly,
after the finish athletes may choose to wait for the results to be posted. Parents/Guardians/Athletes should
provide appropriate sun protection in the form of sunscreen and clothing. The event will attempt to provide
some shelter but participants should not count on it, as resources are limited.
  • Athlete Health: Parents/Guardians/Athletes should assure that the athlete is in a physical condition that will
permit him/her to participate in the event without jeopardizing his/her health or that of other participants.
  • First Aid: The event will have a medical staff available in the event of an emergency.
Parents/Guardians/Athletes should familiarize themselves with the location of the First Aid.  Event volunteers
will be familiar with the location of the First Aid facility.
  • Eyewear: Athletes that require prescription glasses must have a headband to hold the glasses in place during
the event. If the glasses must be removed for the swim there will be a volunteer available to hold the glasses.
Athletes who choose to wear non-prescription sunglasses during the bike and run should consider a
headband but it is not mandatory.
  • Hydration: The weather can be hot and it is vital that your Athlete consume water to prevent dehydration. There
will be water available before, on the course, and following the event. It is suggested that you place a full water
bottle in your child's transition area and remind him/her to drink during transition. They also should be
reminded to drink at the various aid stations and following the event. Any Athlete showing signs of dehydration
should be brought to the Medical Tent.
  • Aid Stations: PowerBars, water, and PowerBar drinks will be available for the athletes on the bike, in the
transition area and on the run course.

Age Group Start Times
The following table shows the PRELIMINARY wave start times. This same information will be in your athlete's packet
at registration. You should be at the check-in table no less than one (1.5) hours before the wave start. You will need
that time to set up the transition area and be prepared to race. The age-groups will be started in the order shown. The
wave start times will be listed and updated within 1 week of the event with a final rundown 2 days before. You should
check back on this web page periodically as the times may change before race day. The order of the start will not
change but the start times may change somewhat. Athletes must be at the lake at least 15 minutes before the start of
their age-group. Volunteers will organize swim waves based on wave number. The 7:30 am start will NOT change.

Hammerhead Kids Triathlon Transition Area:
through the Transition Area twice in the event. In the Transition Area the athlete moves from swimming to biking and then from biking to running.

Every athlete has a spot in the Transition Area (by age-group) where his/her bike, helmet, shoes/sox, shirt, shorts, towel and other needed stuff is
located. The triathlon begins at the pool. Following the swim the athlete moves to the Transition Area where he/she removes any swim equipment
such as goggles, quickly dries off, puts on what is needed for the bike ride, takes his/her bike and (walking the bike) exits the Transition Area
following the sign that says Bike Out. Bathing suit removal is not permitted. Athletes put on shorts and a shirt over their bathing suit with their race
number pinned on in advance. Some athletes just put on a shirt (with number) and ride with bathing suits instead of shorts-over-suits.

After the ride the athlete returns to the Transition Area and (walking the bike) goes back to where his/her equipment is located. The bike is placed in
the rack, helmet and other riding equipment is removed, and the athlete prepares for the run. Generally young athletes ride their bikes in their
running shoes so after removing the bike stuff they are ready for the run. Runners may jog to the Run Out sign in the Transition Area, watching for
bikes and other runners. The triathlon finishes at the end of the run on the track infield.

  1. Get to the race so that you can set up your young athlete's Transition Area location. Look for signs designating your designated age-group.
Locations are not reserved but there will be enough for all athletes. The race starts with the oldest and progresses to the youngest so there
will be racers in the Transition Area when you are setting up. Please be courteous to them and stay clear.
  2. Bring two towels, one of which should be old. Put the old towel on the ground beside the bike at your child's OR YOUR location and place
his/her race stuff on it. The other towel is for drying after the swim. It is recommended that you have a full water bottle there so your athlete
can grab a quick drink before exiting the Transition Area. We will have water stops on all courses but the Transition Area is a good place for a
    bit of fluid.
  3. The time spend in the Transition Area counts on the overall time so it should be as fast as is reasonable but not so fast that your athlete
forgets to put on the helmet or ties his/her shoes. We will have volunteers in the Transition Area to assist athletes so we ask that parents stay
out for the safety of the participants. An exception to this is for the 6 & Under age-group where ONE parent may assist the athlete if needed.
  4. The Transition Area will be guarded by volunteers. To remove the bike from the Transition Area you must show a race number and match it to
the race number on the bike. Your race packet will have a numbered race bib to be worn on the shirt or shorts and two small stick-on race
numbers, one for the bike and one for the helmet. In addition each athlete will have their race number marked on their body by volunteers
using pen. All of these numbers must match.

Event Policies:
  1. Wave Starts: The parent/guardian is responsible for getting the athlete to the event with sufficient time to be ready for his/her swim wave.
Waves are started and timed by pre-assigned numbers. Missing the start time will mean missing the event. The organizers will try to
accommodate any unusual circumstances but there is no guarantee that such can be done.
  2. Swim Aids: Swim aids such as kickboards or flotation devices will be allowed. However, athletes using swim aids will not be eligible for
podium awards (i.e., 1st, 2nd, 3rd place in age group). All athletes will get a participation medal. Athletes must provide their own swim aids.
No performance enhancing devices such as fins will be allowed. For those using swim aids, if per chance they finish their lap quicker than
another swimmer without a swimming aid from within the same wave, the swimmer with the swimming aid will be asked to wait until the non-
aided swimmers have completed their lap.
  3. Adult Swim Assistance: Adult swim assistance will be permitted but assisted athletes (other than physically challenged athletes) will not be
eligible for podium awards (i.e., 1st, 2nd, 3rd place in age group).
  4. Training Wheels: Training wheels will be allowed.
  5. Non-finishers: Athletes not finishing the event will receive a participant's medal. Non-finishers will have no posted times.
  6. Disqualification: Athletes that finish the race but do not complete the total distance of the course (e.g., less than the required laps, short-
cutting the course) will be disqualified. Unsportsman-like conduct is also grounds for disqualification. Volunteers will be monitoring the
course and Transition Area for infractions. Disqualified athletes will receive a participation medal but will be ineligible for podium awards (i.
e., 1st, 2nd, 3rd place in age group) and will not have their times posted.
  7. Age-Limits: There is no set lower age limit but parents/guardians should assess the child's abilities to complete the prescribed course. The
Kids Triathlon is conducted to be a positive experience and no child should be entered that is not going to benefit from the experience. Being
asked to perform beyond one's abilities may not be a positive experience.
  8. Physically Challenged Athletes: The parent/guardian of a physically challenged athlete should contact the event organizers at
info@bodyandmindsolutions.com to make arrangement for any special needs.
  9. Refunds: There are no refunds for the event.
  10. Race Numbers: Race numbers MUST be worn at all times on the bike helmet (front only), on the bike (left side of top tube), and the bibs must
be on the racers from the beginning of the race.
  11. Transition Area: No Parents/Guardians/Spectators are permitted in the Transition Area except for special circumstances with younger
children. Volunteers will be present to assist the athletes and to restrict access. Permission to enter to assist an athlete must be granted by
    the entrance monitor.
  12. Foul weather: The event will happen rain or shine.
